I have a problem with my Maremma. Can you help?
If you have a specific problem with your Maremma, it is best to seek out someone in your local area who can
see you and dog. It is all too easy to misinterpret things at a distance. So if you need help we suggest
the following courses of action:
- Contact your dog's breeder for advice. Good breeders will be all too happy to assist you in ensuring
that your Maremma is healthy and well behaved. If possible take the dog to visit the breeder so that you
can have a proper discussion about the situation and so that the breeder is able to assess the dog.
- Ask for advice at your training class. We recommend that all Maremmas (particularly those that live
in homes as pets) should attend training classes to learn basic good behaviour, at least as a puppy.
Choose a class which uses kind but firm motivational methods rather than brute force and physical punishment.
Although your trainers may not have specific experience of Maremmas they are likely to have wide experience
of behavioural problems. Again, the trainers can see your dog and have a detailed discussion with you. NB.
DO NOT send your Maremma away to be trained or use harsh methods with him/her as this is likely to
create more problems than it solves.
- Consult your vet, particularly with regard to health or nutritional problems (though they can also
help with behavioural issues and if necessary refer you to a specialiast).
- Join your national breed club. They should be able to provide literature and possibly
events where you can meet other Maremmas and their owners. They should also help with members' questions.
Some national clubs are listed on our resources page and accept international members.
- Join one of the Maremma lists on-line. We recommend the Yahoo MaremmaSheepdog list which has
nearly 400 members and is very supportive (use the link on the right to join) .
