Would you recommend the Maremma as a family companion dog?

It depends! Definitely yes if you have fully researched the breed and understand and appreciate its characteristics. Ideally you will live in a rural area with some land of your own for free running exercise, and neighbours who appreciate that barking dogs are a good security aid! In an urban environment the Maremma's natural instincts may be a problem.

Definitely not if you want an obedient dog that will instantly obey your every word or a "white Golden Retriever".

Think very carefully if you are in a suburban environment, with close neighbours and an average garden. It is certainly possible in this environment, if you are dedicated, but it can be hard work and you may find that another breed would suit you better. Make sure you meet some Maremmas, ideally Maremmas who live or have lived in a similar situation to yours, and talk to their owners. Remember many breeders do not live in this kind of situation so may not appreciate the potential problems. Do not make this decision lightly!

There are thousands of companion Maremmas around the world who bring their owners a lot of joy, largely because those owners understand the breed. But there are also a significant minority who end up in rescue often because their owners don't. Please make your decision wisely for your situation and don't add to these rescue numbers.

"If you want obedience and submission, keep away from our breed, but if you appreciate friendship given and received, a trace of humour, and much teaching of the lore of the Wild..."
